Uniform, a problem of Thai students!

Sometimes in weekdays I go to the university, I see undergraduate students with uniforms. I want to go back to that moment. I want to wear a uniform again. I feel upset because when I was in undergraduate level, I didn't like to wear a uniform. At that time, I thoght that wear private clothes was better.

Should university students wear uniform? This is one of the unsolved problems in every university in Thailand. There are a lot of university students who wear private clothes to class. That means they don’t respect university’s rules. It decreases the whole image of universities. Even though there are many campaigns about wearing uniforms but they don’t succeed. They are not continued and strict enough. However, there are many good reasons why student should wear a uniform; it makes students be unitive, feel equal, and help cut down expenses.

Uniform is a symbol of unity. You should think how hard you can be university students. Not many people have a chance to study in a university. The uniform shows that who you are and you are in groups of well-educated people in society. Your parents work so hard to earn enough money to pay for tuition fees. Wearing a uniform also keeps students to be in order and self-discipline and also remind that they are students so their responsibility is to study.

Moreover, wearing a uniform makes students feel equal. Even if you are rich or poor, you wear same clothes, study in the same institute and also be friends. Some students who don’t have much money to spend on clothes, will feel inferior. They will feel uncomfortable and lack of confidence when getting in group among friends who are well-dressed with brand name clothes and expensive accessories. Sometimes, there will be a gap between friends who have different social status.

Besides, it can help cut down expenses. You don’t have to prepare and think a lot about clothes that you should wear in every morning. You don’t have to go shopping so often to buy some brand name or in trend clothes. Luxury clothes don’t help you to get good grades or improve you IQ. The price of uniform is not so expensive. It costs only 500 Baht per 1 set of a uniform but you can wear it for many years. Now, the economical situation is not very good. The cost of living seems to be higher and higher. As Thai citizens, we should follow the sustainable economy theory of The King. If you can’t earn money and still ask money from your parents, so you should be economical as much as you can.

I think university committee should issue new rules about wearing a uniform. The rules should be more strict and practical. For example, take 5 points off if students don’t wear uniforms to class or don’t allow them to wear private clothes in buildings. In addition, there should be a campaign about motivating students to wear uniforms. The campaign should be continued and practical, too. These solutions will work if everybody and every parts in universities coopertate strictly. So, it takes only 4 years of your life to wear a uniform. Time flows like water and 4 years are not long. So, be proud of your institutes and also yourselves!

  1. I didn't wear uniform, too. And not regret it. I think it's not suit my lifestyle. Sometimes I need to ride motorcycle or bicycle to study. I would wear if the uniform is comfortable and sporty. I think sometimes I ran to class, but the shirt could not relief the sweat and it's hard to be ironed as well. What I need is sport wear rather than the shirt and skirt.

When the uniform cannot fit my lifestyle, I remembered I almost quarrel with the instructor because I never wear uniform to class. She gave me C+ which I think because I was ill-behaved, not wearing uniform is like crime to her. Not regret again, coz I hate the student uniform.

Being in the part of society, it devalues my identity. The society depress me everywhere. I cannot express myself. I hate the impractical and out of date rules. Why we need to wear something cannot make our life easier? Many female students ride bicycle with the difficulty. They worry about how to cover her legs and how to ride with safety.

when female student walk on the ladder, I once saw many male students looked up to under her skirt which she was unaware. This memory still stick to me til now. Their eyes showed the disgusting pleasure seeing underwear of those girls.

It's good that many people love wearing uniform, it means they may happy being according to rules, or respect to people like teacher or the respectful places (really?) like university. Why wearing uniform can relate to the cultural issues like pride and respect of university and instructors. It means we put the value of our life upon the power over us. Uniform is nothing to me, it's just the shelter, very superficially to define human being. Sometimes, wearing uniform classifies us as being in intellectual class or being superior than other institutions or vocational colleges. Some students kill each other from different school like in Bangkok when they see the different uniform.

Uniform can cause the alienation and discrimination. Wearing uniform tell us who we are and whom we belong to. So be aware of uniform, it can influence our identity and human's value.

For Thai society, a university uniform shows a unity of its place. I think that adult who are former-teen know that a foreign style is affective to Thai teen for a long time. They are likely to apply foreign idea and behavior to be cool among their friends. Wearing a uniform of university student is not a big issue but could make them proud of their college or university. Why they have to wear a private cloths just because they want to. They should obey the university’s rule to keep traditional style of the university. It’s an adults’ duty to teach their teen to recognize and be proud of their own status. They could not imitate for all foreign styles. I think of “culture deviation” to explain a situation when some Thai people, especially for Thai teen, take a foreign style to be a part of their life. They could lose their identity and deviate their tradition or culture to another direction bit by bit. I believe that the college or the university have their own rules for students’ uniform. I could see some very short skirt with a very tight white blouse but at least the university could keep their own traditional style. Some famous universities still keep their own identity by wearing an appropriate and nice uniform. As a Thai people, I think that wearing a university uniform is still valid nowadays. I hope that new generation could cope with foreign influence which is strongly and widely spread out to Thai society. Wearing a uniform is to keep Thai identity which make none of them to be an old-fashioned but be proud of their own life style which take place only in the university for about 4 years not for their whole lives.
